Maryville History

The city of Maryville is the county seat of Blount County. In 1785, John Craig, a Revolutionary War veteran, established Fort Craig in the area in order to protect settlers from Native American tribes. John Craig donated about 50 acres of land next to his fort for the establishment of the town. The city was named in honor of Mary Grainger, the wife of Gov. William Blount.
