Pendleton History

A trading post was established in the area now known as Pendleton by Dr. William C. McKay in 1851. The post office was established in 1865 was named Marshall, but the name was later changed to Pendleton. Pendleton was incorporated as a city in 1880. Pendleton Woolen Mills was founded in 1893 and is known all over the world as a manufacturer of fine men's plaid shirts and Indian trading blankets. From the 1880s to 1920s, Pendleton had a prospering Chinatown.
