Lima, Ohio, in Allen county, is 58 miles N of Springfield, Ohio and 69 miles SW of Toledo, Ohio . It's situated in northwestern Ohio and is part of the Rust Built. The Ottawa River runs through Lima. It's a prominent regional medical center and home to Procter and Gamble's Tide and Downy facility.

Lima History

The Shawnee Indians lived in the region. In 1885 oil was discovered, which brought Standard Oil to Lima. Benjamin Faurot's Opera House was established in 1882 and was a nationally well known venue. It served as a model for New York theaters. After WW I was over the city had a prominent Ku Klux Klan organization. During the 1920's industries were thriving and the city was well known for the locomotives it produced. Ohio Power Shovel Company and the Lima Locomotive Works Inc., were important factors for the economy.

Lima was one of the world's largest producers of school buses. During World War II Lima was home to a prominent tank manufacturing facility. In the 1970's and 1980's a large number of industrial companies moved out and the city became part of the "Rust Belt." After the 1970's it became a primary retail location for the region.

There are a large number of sites included in the National Register of Historic Places. Lima Symphony Orchestra. Union Block is part of the National Register of Historic Places. Allen County Courthouse is an impressive looking building. Armory-Latisona Building. Griffith Brese Farm is included in the National Register of Historic Places. The Metropolitan Block. The Lima Memorial Hall is a splendid structure. The Allen County Fair attracts a large crowd.

Lima Higher Education

The city is home to the University of Northwestern Ohio, the Ohio State University, Lima Campus and the James A. Rhodes State College.
