Wake Forest History

The area now known as the town of Wake Forest was originally developed around 1820. Dr. Calvin Jones from New England purchased the land in the same year and later sold it to the North Carolina Baptist Convention. In fact, Dr. Jones' farm is the site of Wake Forest College, which was originally named as Wake Forest Manual Labor Institute. The Raleigh and Gaston Railroad first entered the area in 1840. It was incorporated as the "Town of Wake Forest College? in 1880. Later in 1909, it settled on its present name. Wake Forest was named after Wake County.
