Guntersville History

Guntersville was founded in the early 1800s by John Gunter, a German immigrant. Originally, the area was inhabited by the Cherokee Indians. In order to obtain more land to mine, Gunter married the chief of the tribe's daughter and promised to provide salt to the tribe. Later on, the area was named after him. The city was incorporated in August 1847. It became the county seat of the newly formed Marshall County in 1836.
