Cullman History

Cullman was founded by Colonel John Gottfried Cullmann in 1873. Cullman was a German refugee exiled from his country because he was involved in a plot to assassinate the Russian czar. Originally, the city was part of Cherokee Nation. Cullman purchased the land from the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company. It became the county seat of Cullman County, which was founded on January 24, 1877. The city was incorporated in 1878.
